William E. Day

August 23, 1948 — February 15, 2025

William E. “Billy” Day Sr. of Joliet, age 76, passed away on February 15, 2025 in the comfort of his own home, while surrounded by family, after an extended illness. He was born on August 23, 1948 in Spring Valley, IL to his parents Harry and Virginia (nee Carson) Day.

As a young man, who had not even had a chance to finish high school, Billy answered his country’s call and served honorably in the Vietnam War as a proud member of the United States Army. While enlisted, he earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal as well as a Good Conduct Medal. After his service to his country was complete, he went on to build a long career providing for his family, most notably as an employee of EJ&E Railroad and most recently working in security at The Chicagoland Speedway. He raised his two children here in the Joliet area, was proud of his grandchildren, and even more proud of his great grandson while enjoying the excitement of the impending birth of his second great grandson later this Spring. He held a great affinity for the Coca-Cola brand throughout his life, and even went so far as to ensure that his favorite brand was represented as a component of his final wishes.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Virginia, his son William “BJ” Day Jr., and his sister Cathy Martin.

He is survived by his loving daughter Katreania, who cared for him so compassionately during the final months of his life; his grandsons Jo’voun (Torri) Johnson and Deven (Alyssa) Johnson; his great grandson Grayson Johnson and another great grandson to arrive later this spring; his brothers Denny (Hilda) Day, Kevin (the late Penny) Day, Ronnie (Mary) Day, and Rusty Day; as well as his sister Patti Day.

According to Billy’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and his Earthly remains will be inurned with full military honors during a ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL 60421 on Wednesday February 26, 2025 at 2:30 pm.
