Virginia M. (Krall) Susner

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

Virginia Marie Susner (nee Krall), age 93, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, IL.

Born in 1929 to the late John and Mary Krall (nee Olech) in Joliet. A lifelong devout Catholic and 1947 graduate of Providence Catholic High School. Her desire to attend Providence was so great that she applied at age 13 for a job at Trackman’s Pharmacy and used her earnings to pay for tuition. At age 16, she found summer employment at a law firm in Chicago and rode the train into the city every day. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Richard F. Susner Sr., whom she met while working at Knapp Bros. in Joliet. She continued working until her first child was born.

Widowed at age 50, she returned to the workforce full-time for the next 35 years. She was employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was instrumental in starting the Pastoral Care Services and later was employed at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home where she greeted everyone with a charismatic smile and encouraging word.

Mom’s talents were many. As an excellent baker, she created and decorated countless wedding, birthday, and special occasion cakes for friends and family. She took voice and piano lessons at the Conservatory in Joliet and sang for weddings and other occasions. Her potica was always made with love and will be missed on holidays and special celebrations.

Virginia is survived by her children, Richard Jr. (Donna) Susner of Joliet, Paul (Sally) Susner of Shorewood, Michael J. (Caroline) Susner of Shorewood and Pamela Susner of Joliet; grandchildren, Richard III (Nanci) Susner of Fort Mitchell, KY, Michael A. (Lisa) Susner of Kettering, OH, Rebecca (John) Noonan of St. Peter’s, MO; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Valerie and Clara Susner; sister, Judith Planinc; brother, William “Bill” Krall; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by her husband, Richard F. Susner, Sr.; parents, John and Mary (nee Olech) Krall; brother, Robert Krall; niece, Janet (nee Planinc) Brown; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.
