Age 96 of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 19, 2024 at Burr Ridge Senior Living.

Vern was born and raised in Joliet and spent most of her life there. Church and family were most important to her. She was very active in her church, National Secretaries Association and American Legion. Vern worked at Uniroyal Corporation as an executive secretary for 21 years before retiring in 1988. She received accreditation as a Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) from Northern Illinois University. After retiring she took up golf, which she enjoyed.

Vern was married to her loving husband Jerome for 67 years until his passing in 2015. She is survived by her loving children: Marilyn (Tom) Palmer, Rick (Brenda) Kabat and Bill (Mary Ann) Kabat; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a eulogy by family at 7:00 p.m., at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet. A celebration of Vern’s life will continue on Saturday, March 9, 2024 with closing prayers in the funeral home chapel beginning at 9:30 a.m. The funeral will then drive in procession to Holy Cross Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow and Vern will be laid to rest with her husband at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Romeoville.
