Shirley M. Hackett (nee Ungs)
Age 93 of Joliet and formerly of Naperville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2020 with her family by her side at Joliet Area Community Hospice.
Born April 18, 1927 in Luxemburg, Iowa, Shirley was the daughter of Edward, Sr. and Rita (Lueken) Ungs.
She was raised and educated in Luxemburg, Iowa and following high school, moved to Chicago to attend the University of St. Francis. There Shirley earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She began her career as a nurse with Infant Welfare Services where Shirley would do home visits for new mothers and teach them how to care for their new babies. Shirley transitioned to Resurrection Hospital in Chicago as a registered nurse where she was seen as a prominent member of the hospital staff. She was with Resurrection Hospital until retirement, but remained very active with the Resurrection Hospital Women’s Auxiliary for numerous years.
In Shirley’s free time she enjoyed flower gardening, travel and baking. She was a fantastic cook and would dedicate her Sunday’s to baking a fruit pie for the whole family to enjoy. Shirley also enjoyed hosting friends and family for any occasion and always made sure to look her best. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Shirley is survived by her children: Karen Maclean and Dr. John Bokosky; grandchildren: Jennifer Kiesewetter, Carolyn (Jason) Harrington, Steven (Amanda) Gabbert, Kelly (Daniel) Silva and Michael Bokosky; great-grandchildren: Grace Williams, William Harrington, Wesley Harrington, Molly Gabbert, Mason Gabbert, Brynne Silva, Lou Silva and Dylan Silva; two sisters-in-law: Julie Ungs and Joanne Ungs, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Edward, Sr. and Rita, and brothers: Herbert Ungs and Edward Ungs, Jr.
Per Shirley’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.
A private service will be held at a later date.
