Rose M Smajd

Rose M. Smajd (nee Montalto), age 92, at rest on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Columbus Hospice House, Columbus, Georgia. She was the loving mother of Michael A. (Mary) Smajd, Midland, Georgia and JoAnn (Joseph) Kazor, Waukee, Iowa and the dearest grandmother to Joey (Jennifer) Smajd, Mikey, and Andy Smajd, and Cara Kazor. She was also the loving great grand mother of Isabella Smajd. Also survived by her sister, Monica Fuchs and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Smajd (1969), her parents, Anthony and Jennie (nee Lombardo) Montalto, and a brother, Carl Montalto. Born in Chicago, Rose moved to Joliet in 1949 when she married Joseph. In 1973 she graduated from the College of St. Francis. She retired from substitute teaching in the Joliet area public and parochial schools, then from the Joliet Sears store after 26 years of service. Also, Rose sold Avon products in Joliet for 37 years. Rose enjoyed living in Columbus, Georgia near her son Mike and family since 2004.
In lieu of flowers donations are requested to be sent to the Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31909, or to Saint Anne Catholic Church, 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus, Georgia 31907.
A Celebration of Rose"s Life will begin with prayers at the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Saturday, January 29, 2011, then in procession to St. Paul Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 AM. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville. Visitation will be on Friday, January 28 from 6 to 8 PM.
