Robert Doszak

March 6, 1946 — October 30, 2023

Robert "Bob" S. Doszak, a beloved member of the Joliet community, passed away on October 30, 2023, in Arizona. He was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, where he attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School.

Bob's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own business, "Bob's Auto Supply," which operated in Joliet and Plainfield for many years. While Bob excelled in his professional endeavors, it was his musical talent that truly defined him. Embracing the accordion at the tender age of 6, he quickly became a virtuoso. By the age of 14, Bob had formed his own band, embarking on a lifelong journey as a musician.

For over 70 years, Bob delighted audiences across the country with his accordion performances. Many referred to him as Joliet's own Polka King. His lively compositions and spirited playing brought joy and entertainment to countless people throughout his career.

However, Bob's love for music extended far beyond performing on stage. He shared his passion with his family, instilling a deep appreciation and talent for music in both of his sons. Married to Judy for 38 years, their family traveled alongside Bob to various performance venues. Their home became a haven for fellow musicians who often stayed overnight. Known for their warm hospitality, the Doszak family provided good food, drinks, and fellowship to all who visited. Bob himself would stay up into the early hours of the morning preparing meals and ensuring everyone felt welcome.

In later years, Bob decided to make Arizona his second home and purchased a residence in Apache Junction. Over the past 15 years, he immersed himself in Arizona's vibrant music scene, building new friendships with people from all over the United States and Canada. Bob continued to share his accordion talents with unwavering dedication until the end.

Bob's legacy extended beyond his hometown, as he was the founder of the Illinois Polkafest. This annual event, celebrating Slovenian style polka music, has been captivating audiences for an impressive 35 years. Held in OakBrook, St. Charles, Naperville, and currently in Schaumburg, the festival continues to be a testament to Bob's enduring influence and passion for music. Bob was an honorary member of the South Side Civic Club and past president.

Preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Judith (Malsky), son Robert F. “Bobby”, son-in-law Daniel J Doglio, parents Stan and Dorothy (Smrekar) Doszak, Sisters Norma Jean (infancy) and Loretta (Doszak) Roper, Brother-in-law Fritz Malsky.

Bob leaves behind a loving family who adored him. He is survived by his daughter Kim (Doszak) Doglio, son Chris (Kayla) Doszak. Bob also cherished his special friend and companion of 17 years, Sharon Anderson. Sister-in-law Rita Malsky and Brother-in-law Allen Roper.

In addition to his immediate family, Bob will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Jessica Doszak, Danny and Emma Doglio, Jaxon Doszak, and Brooklyn Piper-Doszak. His great-grandchildren Paul and Austin Summers.

Bob is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins who will cherish the moments they shared with him throughout the years.

In reflecting on the life of Robert "Bob" S. Doszak, we celebrate his remarkable achievements in business and music. His legacy as the Polka King of Joliet will forever be etched in our hearts. Bob's generosity, warmth, and love for his family and friends will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

May he rest in eternal harmony as he serenades the heavens with his accordion's joyful melodies.
