Robert L. Churnovic Sr., age 98 of Crest Hill, IL, passed away peacefully at home on March 6, 2025. He was born to Nicholas and Freida (nee Mueller) Churnovic in Joliet, IL on October 19, 1926.
Robert was raised in Crest Hill, IL before serving his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. He and his wife Mary were married for fifty-seven years before her passing in 2008. Together they raised four sons. Robert provided for his family and taught his sons the values of hard work and dedication to family. He was the founder and owner of Churnovic & Sons Masonry and Joliet Glass Block Window Company, which allowed him the opportunity to participate in constructing many of the buildings in the Joliet area. Robert’s family will always remember him as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, favorite uncle, and avid golfer. He relished the opportunity to bring a smile to everyone’s face, whether with his friends enjoying morning coffee at the Jefferson St. McDonald’s; or with a smile as he waved to friends and neighbors.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Freida, his wife of fifty-seven years Mary Churnovic (nee Chiarmonte), and his beloved son Sam Churnovic.
He is survived by his sons Robert Churnovic Jr., Gary Churnovic (Howard Kaplan), and Nick Churnovic; his grandchildren Lori (Jim) Fordonski, Matthew Churnovic, and Timothy Churnovic; as well as four great grandchildren and many other extended family members and friends.
In line with Robert’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and his earthly remains will be held in the care of his surviving family members. The Rock will not be forgotten.
