Richard J. “Dick” Mutz, age 85, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016.
He is survived by his daughter, Geri Jo (Dr. Andrew) Shuler and his grandsons, Gunnar and Gus Shuler; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cordelia “Coke” (nee Flores); parents, Joseph and Anna (nee Gregorash) Mutz; brothers, Raymond (Phyllis), Clarence (Ruth), Bernard (Marge), and Joseph Mutz; sisters, Josephine (Edward) Pluth and Lorraine “Susie” Belay.
Born on June 22, 1930, in Joliet and grew up on Broadway Street. He belonged to several different stock and coin clubs throughout the years and enjoyed introducing kids to coin collecting. He helped many kids get their first start in collecting.
He enjoyed spending time with his only grandchildren, Gunnar and Gus. He frequently babysat for them and then followed them throughout the country for their wakeboarding and snowboarding competitions. He was the boys’ number 1 fan. He traveled extensively with the family throughout the United States and Europe. His favorite trips were to the redwoods in California.
He worked for Carlson Asphalt Company in Palos Park, IL for 27 years and spent another 10 years working for Persico Construction. Dick was a foreman on the job and a member of the Teamsters Union. He took a great deal of pride in the quality of his crew’s work.
Richard loved helping children and was a generous, happy and loving man. He will be missed by many.
A celebration of Richard’s life will begin on Saturday, February 27, 2016 with a visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11:00 a.m. Per Richard’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded. Interment of cremated remains will be held privately at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery in Joliet. There will be no funeral home visitation or services.
