Michael T. Walker
Age 76 of Plainfield, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at Edwards Hospital in Naperville.
Born October 7, 1944 in Joliet, Michael Thomas was a son of William and Leona (Kretz) Walker. He was raised and educated in Joliet and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School with the class of 1962. Following graduation, Mike worked for U.S. Steel until deciding to enlist and proudly serve in the United States Army during the war in Vietnam. After his time in the service, Mike returned home and returned back to work with U.S. Steel. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Penelope Scherle, and in 1971 Mike and Penny were married in St. John the Baptist church in Joliet. Together they made a home and raised their son. Mike earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Lewis University and went on to work for Crane Composites which was formerly known as Kemlite until retiring in 2009.
Mike was a people person and in his free time he loved to travel. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus and earned the 4th degree knight ranking within the organization. Mike was also active with various charities including P.A.D.S. and the Plainfield Food Pantry. He also served as usher for a number of years at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Plainfield. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Penny and son: Jonathan as well as numerous extended family members.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents: William and Leona and his great-aunt: Lillie Waldvogel.
Family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Friday, September 24, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet.
Per Mike’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day, Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 600 Brook Forest Avenue in Shorewood. Interment will follow Mass and Mike will be laid to rest at Plainfield Township Cemetery in Plainfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made as gifts in Michael’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
