Lester B Townsend Jr., age 70, of Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024. Lester was born on September 30, 1953, in New Madrid, Missouri. He was a devout Christian who found solace and strength in reading the Bible and embracing his faith. In his youth, Lester was a member of Main Baptist Church in Aurora, IL and later attended Lighthouse Church of All Nations in Alsip, IL.
Lester graduated from East Aurora High School before advancing his education. He earned an Associates degree from Waubonsee Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Philosophy from Northern Illinois University. He received his Masters degree from National Louis University in counseling/psychology.
His commitment to service was evident through his distinguished tenure in the Army, where he was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Infantry Badge, reflecting his dedication and exemplary conduct.
Professionally, Lester obtained his LCPC and dedicated over two decades to Mercy Hospital, initially working as a mental health counselor before transitioning to a role greeting and helping patients and visitors. He also worked for several years as a mental health counselor at St Joseph Hospital in Elgin, IL. His warmth and empathy made a lasting impact on all he encountered.
Lester's life was a testament to the value of family. He is survived by his children, Lester Townsend III, Toni Townsend (Dennis), Lawrence Townsend, Terrence Townsend, Katie Townsend (Micheal), and Kristi Townsend, along with his beloved grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving and supportive parents, Katie Mae Townsend and Lester B Townsend Sr.
During his retirement, Lester enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who could always lift his spirits.
A celebration of Lester’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Words of remembrance will be held in the funeral home chapel at 12:00 p.m. then driving in procession to Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Aurora.
