Joseph R. Shetina

October 29, 1937 — April 18, 2022

It is with great sadness that the Shetina family announce the peaceful passing of Joe Shetina, Monday, April 18, 2022 at his home in Joliet, Illinois. Joe was born Joseph Robert Shetina on October 29, 1937 in Rockdale, Illinois and was a son of Edward and Jennie (Troha) Shetina.

Joe was a graduate with the class of 1955 from Joliet Township High School and later attended Lewis College and Northern Illinois University. He was a well-known real estate appraiser, but perhaps best known as a Joliet City Councilman, serving District #1 for 36 years from 1975 to 2011. He also served earlier on the Will County Board.

Humor was one of Joe’s greatest gifts. He could be found daily at the round table at Earl’s solving the world’s problems with friends, Bob Hacker, Gene and Joe Burla, Ed Akeman, John Leach, Perry Rudman, Paul Gantzert, and adding the Saturday guy, Henry Berry. Occasional drop-ins were always welcome along with the memories of those that had left their places but were not lost, Ed Czerkies, Earl D’ Amico, Jack Weber and Bob Kiep. When Earl’s closed, the round table moved to Thayer’s to continue the tradition. The fun continued with the poker guys, Ralph Sherman, Jim Brady, Pete Nichols and others who always shared great times together.

Joe is survived by his loving wife: Susan (nee’ Moore); children: Mark (Julie Lynch) Shetina, Douglas (Donna Etheridge) Shetina and Dana Shetina; grandchildren: Mandy, Michael, Joe, Sarah, Samantha and Taylor; sister: Jean Pellegrini, and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Jennie; brothers: Richard, Edward, and William, and former sister-in-law: JoAnn Bozich Shetina Hamner.

The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet.

A celebration of Joe’s life will continue on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Tezak Funeral Home with a short visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow and Joe will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park II – Hills of Rest in Joliet.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mike Turk for his friendship to Joe and his assistance during Joe’s final years.
