Joseph P. Pomykala, age 95, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at his home with family by his side.

Survived by his loving children, Joseph Jr., David (Leonor) Pomykala, Mary Kay (John) Mikuska, Gary (Laura) Pomykala & Cyndy (Gary) Biermann;  grandchildren, Brett (Heather) and  Kristen Pomykala, Michelle (Pete) Murphy, Keri Mikuska,  Matthew (Danielle), Jeffrey, Tymothy Pomykala, Troy and Tyler Biermann; 6 great grandchildren; siblings,  Andrew (Edith), Sophie Kirincich and Anthony (Sharon) Pomykala. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Margaret M. (nee Matay) Pomykala; parents, Walenty and Mary (nee Sowa) Pomykala, two brothers and one sister.

Joseph was born in Joliet and a lifelong resident. He retired from Olin Chemical.  He was a proud World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS Emmons and USS Richard P. Leary. Joseph was  a member of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans, VFW Cantigny Post # 367, American Legion Post #1080, Joliet Rivals (past treasurer), Senior Citizens of Will County, Honorary Life Member of the Old Timers Baseball Association and the Joannites.

Joseph was awarded the opportunity to travel on the Honor Flight for World War II Veterans on November 2, 2011 and was honored on the ice as a World War II veteran during the Star Spangled Banner at the Chicago Blackhawks Game on April 25, 2015.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph’s memory may be made to Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

A celebration of Joseph’s life will begin on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 with a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until prayers in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. then driving in procession to Holy Cross Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11:30 a.m.  Interment to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
