Joseph J. Cernugel Age 94, at rest Friday August 13, 2010.
Born March 12, 1916 in Joliet, where he resided at his death. Joe was a lifelong resident of Joliet, Illinois and a long time employee at U.S. Steel Company. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He saw action in Europe at the D-Day Invasion of Europe, the Battle of the Bulge and elsewhere. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Gazella Cernugel. He is survived by his daughter, Janet (Terry) Muir, his son, Joseph M. (Janet) Cernugel, his grandchildren, Tracy (J.B.) Phillips, Kelly (Jonathan) Davis, Jody Muir, Joe Cernugel, Danny Cernugel and his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Kristen, and Haley Phillips and Christopher Davis. Also survived by his sisters, Marge Grayhack, Dolores Luzbetak and Bernadine (Chester) Rutkowski. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Mary (nee Kambic) Cernugel, sisters, Anne Valek and Marie Dedinski and his brothers, Martin, Robert, William and Frank. Joe"s greatest joys were fishing, rooting for his Cubs and enjoying the accomplishments of his family. His family will miss him very much.
A Celebration of Joseph"s life will be held on Monday, August 16, 2010 with prayers at the funeral home at 10:30 AM, then in procession to St. Joseph Church, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday morning at the funeral home from 9AM until time of services.
