John Joseph Prebeg, age 90, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital on February 6, 2013 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Glencoe, Ohio to the late Matthew Prebeg and Anna (Bokulich) Prebeg. John was a life-long resident of Joliet, Illinois.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years Filomena (Bartolomei) Prebeg; four sons, Matthew (Elizabeth) Prebeg, Michael Prebeg, Joseph Prebeg and Guy Prebeg; three daughters, Anna Marie (Jeff) Coffey, Rose Marie (Perry) Sprowls, and Theresa (Martin) Farrell; grandchildren, John (Susan) Coffey, Jeremy Coffey, Taren (David) Caldwell, Kyle (Megan) Coffey, Brooke (Travis) Owens, Zachary, Maxwell and Chance Prebeg, Nicholas and Mia Sprowls and Dylan and Ian Farrell, and great grand-daughter Cessie Coffey. John is survived by his sister Diane (the late Bill) Govednik and brother Steve Salopek. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, especially his Godson Raymond Brenczewski.
John was preceded in death by his siblings Milan Prebeg, Anne (Raymond) Brenczewski, Katherine (Ceaser) Bartolomei, Rose (Vincent) Kennerty and Mary (Joseph) Bozicevich.
John spent part of his youth in the Civilian Conservation Corp. before joining the United States Army in 1942. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 with a ranking of Tech SGT working as a Tank Destroyer/Platoon Sergeant. He worked at U. S. Steel for 46 years before retiring in 1996 at the age of 73. John enjoyed many years coaching baseball for the youth of Joliet. He loved pitching in an over-35 baseball league until the age of 72 with his nephew Raymond. He was a life-long member and supporter of St. Mary Nativity Parish and School.
John was passionate about health and fitness, and growing flowers, vegetables and garlic. He loved sports and was an avid White Sox fan. He will be remembered for his quick wit and practical jokes which everyone looked forward to and enjoyed. Above all, JohnA�??s dedication and loyalty was to God and his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in JohnA�??s name to St. Mary Nativity School or the Lewy Body Dementia Foundation.
A Celebration of JohnA�??s life will begin on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 9:30 am with prayers at the funeral home chapel, then moving in procession to St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery, Crest Hill. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
