John ""Sarge"" Mateski (Matuszewski) passed away peacefully at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center on Tuesday, April 10, 2007.

Survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lucia (Chval) and one loving son, John Jr. (Tina) Mateski of Kansas City, MO. Also two grandchildren, Gabriel ""Gabe"" and Anya. Also survived by a sister, Julia (late Andrew) Patrick; and four brothers, George (Bea), Edward (Lorraine), Michael (Rita) and Stanley (Jean) Matuszewski. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by his parents, Nikolaj and Rose (Zembicki) Matuszewski; sisters, Mary (late Joseph) Luzbetak, Anna (late Stephen) Luzbetak; Catherine (late John) Stefanski and Victoria (late Michael) Nosse; brothers, Joseph (late Rose) Matuszewski; and infant brother, Frank; nephew, John Stefanski Jr.

John Served with the U.S. Army in World War II and was stationed at the White House under President Eisenhower, as well as in Germany, Austria, Virginia, Georgia, and California. He retired in 1965 after 23 years of distinguished service as a Staff Sergeant 1st Class E7. He was employed for 18 years with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1984.

John, a lifetime member of the Cantigny Post 367 VFW will be buried with full military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. He was also a member of DAV.

John was known by friends and family as ""Sarge"" and will be remembered for his love of golf, bowling and playing cards. He enjoyed family golf outings, the yearly family and army reunions, and frequent visits to Kansas City.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois in John's name would be appreciated.

Services will be held on Monday, April 16, 2007 with a Chapel Service at the Funeral Home at 10:00 with Fr. Lane officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
