In addition to his love of performing, John was a sportsman, being a member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association for 25 years. He enjoyed biking, snowmobiling, water skiing and boating. His most treasured moments were those spent with family and friends at his cabin on the Kankakee River. Watching wildlife, catching sunsets on his Boston Whaler and tending to his lawn were some of his happiest times.

John grew up working with his dad in the family auto repair shop. John owned a parts store, worked at NAPA and US Autoforce, and owned and operated a residential irrigation company.

John is survived by his wife, Amy, who he married May 7, 2009.
