Jim Szopinski

May 30, 1955 — September 30, 2024

Jim Szopinski, age 69, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024, at Lightways Hospice.

Jim was born on May 30,1955 in Joliet, IL to the late Aloysius and Mary (Bodnar) Szopinski. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob and Denny,  his in-laws, Nick and Theresa (Dragovan) Esler , several family members and dear friends, and his canine buddy, Russel. Jim graduated from St. Cyril’s Grade School, Joliet Central High School (‘73), and Joliet Junior College (‘75).

Jim will be remembered for his creativity, generosity, exceptional skills as a DIY expert, and as an avid, gifted musician. He picked up his first guitar at age 10 and never put it down. He continued to play and perform in bands and write original music until his passing. He deeply appreciated music of all genres. He and his wife enjoyed concerts, watching classic movies and tv shows, nostalgia, riding bikes, and going on motorcycle adventures. Above all, Jim was kind. That kindness came from a deep, quiet soul that saw the world differently. Within that depth was also a great sense of humor. He was a gentle, humble, and wise person who people turned to for advice, support, and a listening ear. He epitomized the notion that you could be kind, deep, and cool at the same time.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Lynn (nee Esler), and beloved children, Jamie Haake (Brett), Alison Szopinski (Madura Wijewardena), Nick Szopinski (Joselyn Williams), grandchildren, Kamryn, Katelyn, Asha, Sahan, special bonus grandchild, Brynn, and a new grandchild due in 2025. He is also survived by his nieces, Beth Szopinski, Jill (Ben) Fogg, great-nephew, Charlie, his sister-in-law, Nikki (late Norm) Stowe, and numerous friends and family who love him dearly.
