James E. Johnson (Jim) formerly of Joliet and Shorewood, passed away July 17, 2017 at the age of 81 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Jim was the only child of William and Viola (Beuthner) Johnson and was born on November 14, 1935 in Chicago Heights, IL.  He graduated from Joliet Township High School and attended Joliet Junior College. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1955 and served for three years including two years in Germany.  Following his discharge from the Army he completed his studies at JJC where he met his future wife, Judith Long. They were married in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Joliet and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

Jim was employed by Argonne National Laboratory for 24 years, followed by Commonwealth Edison Braidwood Nuclear Station until his retirement in 1996. He and his wife then moved to Punta Gorda, FL for many years, returning to Shorewood in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Viola Johnson and his parents-in-law Kermitt and Ann Long.

Surviving are his wife, Judy (nee Long); daughter, Vicky (Ken) Johnson Lotterman and son Robert (Lee Ann Marquardt); grandchildren, Alyssa Azman, Zachary Azman and Jacob Azman of Grand Rapids, MI; Kirsten Johnson (Jon Pfingsten) of Morris, IL, and Stacey Johnson (Cody Griesbaum) of Columbia, MO; great-grandsons, Julian Horvath and Deagan Azman; brother-in-law, Michael Long (Terry) of Silver Spring, MD; cousins, Kay Nettles (Bob Bradley) of Houston, TX and Michael Johnson (Judy) of Channahon also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America would be appreciated.

A celebration of James’ life will begin on Friday, July 21, 2017 with a memorial visitation at Tezak Funeral Home (1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet) from 9:00 a.m. until the time of chapel service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Jerry Lyte officiating. Inurnment to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL where full military honors will be conducted.
