James A. “Jim” Gray, age 75, passed away unexpectedly in his home on July 6, 2024. He was born to Peter and Mary Ann Gray (nee Gruber) on April 27, 1949 in Joliet, IL.

Jim was a family man first, who was always willing to put his own wants and needs aside for the benefit of his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a very hard working and determined individual, always proving himself to be an excellent provider who could be counted on to keep his family safe and secure. His family is proud to honor his service to our country as he did his best to provide that same safety and security to his fellow citizens with his time spent as a member of the United States Army. In social settings, Jim was well-liked by everyone and was known to be a man who was very enjoyable to be around. Jim’s early hobbies included golfing and bowling, and spending quality time with his family. He enjoyed coaching and supporting his children in their athletic endeavors and other interests. He also enjoyed watching his beloved Chicago White Sox. As he got older, Jim’s greatest joy was watching his grandchildren do all the things they love. He spent countless hours being their biggest cheerleader. They all truly adored their Papa.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Mary Ann Gray, his in-laws John and Eleanor Bajt, and his niece Nicole Gray.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Denise Gray (nee Bajt), his children Jeffrey (Jennifer) Gray and Debra (John) Ford, his grandchildren Camryn and Adyson Gray, and Kaeli and John Ford Jr., his siblings Diane (Dave) Linko, Richard (Penny) Gray, Linda (Dan) Strodtman, and his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Terri Bajt. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

James A. “Jim” Gray will be laid to rest with his fellow servicemen and women at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 with full military honors. Cremation rites have been accorded per Jim’s wishes. The family respectfully requests that all attendees at Jim’s committal service dress comfortably in jeans or shorts and to wear something in Jim’s favorite color of blue if possible.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome any donations be made to Denise Gray.
