Harold H. Karstens

Harold H. Karstens, age 98, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018.

Harold is survived by his wife, Garnet A. Karstens (nee Foster); children, Kevin (Sheila) Karstens and Penny (Edward) Cafferata; two grandchildren, Jessica (Jeffrey) Merrill and Kathleen (Don) Spengel; and four great-grandchildren, Yvette and Fiona Spengel, and Hunter and Logan Merrill.

Preceded in death by his parents, Henry Karstens and Clara Karstens (nee Kemphert); brothers, Clarence and Lloyd Karstens; and sisters, Minnie Hensel and Clara Chaplin.

Harold was born in Downers Grove, Illinois on August 19, 1919. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater. After his service, Harold worked as a machinist in the textile industry until retiring in 1981.

Harold enjoyed working on cars, woodworking, and crafts.  After retirement, he was an officer and active member of the Mt. Greenwood Senior Club and American Legion Post 854.  He was also a member of the Mt. Greenwood Lutheran Church for over fifty years.

Harold’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of both Willow Falls Assisted Living and Villa Franciscan Skilled Nursing Facilities for their care and compassion.

A memorial visitation will be held at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet, Illinois on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The family invites relatives and friends to meet them at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois for a committal service that will be held the following day on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
