Dorothy Mae Rommel Janda (nee’ Matuszewski)
Age 86 of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Amita Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook.
Born February 6, 1936 in Joliet, Dorothy Mae was a daughter of Albert and Christine (Valek) Matuszewski. She was raised and educated in Joliet and graduated from Providence High School with the class of 1954. In her early years, Dorothy worked for Illinois Bell as a switchboard operator and then transitioned to Argonne National Laboratory until becoming a Certified Nurses Assistant. As a CNA she worked and cared for patients at both Villa Franciscan and Silver Cross Hospital. In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed playing Bingo and going dancing with her long-time friend, Stan Onopa. The two were avid dancers and spent many years at the Slovenian Home and other events dancing the polka. Her most treasured time were always spent with her family during numerous celebrations. Dorothy will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children: Robert (Lori Turner) Rommel and Susan (Thomas) Olson; grandchildren: Eric Rommel, Alexander Olson and Kristina Olson, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins, and the father of her children: Roger Rommel.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents: Albert and Christine; sister: Rita (Michael) Matuszewski; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and her dear friend: Stanley Onopa.
Family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Saturday, April 2, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. until time of funeral service beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet.
Per Dorothy’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following services and she will be laid to rest with her parents at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Joliet.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Lakewood Nursing Center in Plainfield for the exceptional care given to Dorothy throughout the years.
