Derik Jason Leal

“D.J.”

Age 42 of Crest Hill, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born September 19, 1978 in Chicago, Derik is a son of Rose and Peter Leal. He was raised and educated in the Crest Hill area and graduated from Lockport High School with the class of 1996. Derik focused his High School experience on socializing, helping others and a higher learning. It was his choice to be an organ donor so that others can learn from his experience.

Derik had a passion for movies, particularly in the horror genre where he built an extensive library of DVDs of collectors’ items. His other interests fell into science and the study of theology by recording morning mass every Sunday. His last job was with Trinity Services in New Lenox where he cleaned and maintained medical offices. Derik was intrigued by his hobbies of bird watching from his breakfast table. Befriending birds, Derik enjoyed the rebellious music from the 1950’s era of “Rock-N-Roll”, and at every family gathering, he’ll tell you his views on politics after having a cup of coffee with cake after dinner. He was known to be a great conversationalist with friends, family and colleagues. His infectious smile and his compassionate spirit would light up anyone’s day.

Derik is survived by his mother Rose; his three siblings: Peter, Elizabeth, and Kevin; his nephew: Christopher, and nieces: Denise and Alyssa, and his grand-nieces: Peyton and Camilla. Passing away on the winter solstice, Derik’s passing will lead the family to the brightest day.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. until time of a family only funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet. Father Jerome Kish will preside services.

Interment will follow and Derik will be laid to rest in Saint Mary Nativity Cemetery in Crest Hill.
