Age 85 of Wilmington died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Embassy Care Center in Wilmington, IL. Born in Iowa on November 6, 1922 to the late Harvey and Hazel (nee McCannon) Battin.
Beloved husband of 21 years to Evelyn I. (nee Cooper) Maas; loving father of William C. (Mary Fran) Battin of Crest Hill, IL., Patricia E. (Ken) Frey of Wilmington, IL., Jenny (Rodney) Boots of Benton, IL., Debbie Gillihan of Coal City, IL., Robert L. (Sherry) Battin of Middleburg, FL. Loving step-father of John Cooper of Portage, IN., Lee (Nora) Maas of South Bend, IN., Patrick (Barb) of Kentucky. Dearest grandfather of thirteen and great-grandfather of nineteen. One brother, Robert L. (Frances) Battin. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Preceded in death by his loving first wife, Rita A. (nee Pasdertz) Battin (1982) after 35 years, stepson Michael Maas; and grandson Curtis E. Boots.
Gene was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II and retired from Alcoa (formerly Reynolds Metals of McCook, IL) after 37 years of service. Member of Cantigny Post VFW #367.
Gene enjoyed residing on the Kankakee River for many years and enjoyed boating, fishing and woodworking as hobbies.
A Chapel Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Interment at Elmhurst Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3-8 PM.
