Consuelo Diaz

November 14, 1926 — November 3, 2020

Consuelo Diaz, age 93, passed away peacefully in the early hours of November 3rd, 2020 following a short illness. She was born November 14th, 1926 in Michoacán, Mexico to Josefa Alvarez and Marciano Diaz. She developed her business sense at an early age when she and her brothers and sisters were given the responsibility of opening up the family grist mill every morning. It was several miles away and she would go by horseback. As a young woman, she was courted by the handsome Jose Diaz- who would serenade her with his song and guitar, and usually get run off by Consuelo’s strict parents. Young love prevailed and they were wed on February 14th, 1948 and had 50 years together before Jose passed in September of 1998.

Consuelo was a businesswoman at heart; when her children were small, she started raising chickens. By the time that she was through, she had over 500 hens, which kept the children busy collecting and sorting the eggs. With her earnings, she became a hard money lender, and the young couple acquired properties along the way. She and her husband eventually owned two multi-unit buildings in Mexico City.

1n 1959, Consuelo and the children joined Jose and permanently moved to the U.S. in search of a better life for their children.  In addition to running the household and raising children, Consuelo worked as a seamstress, and after a busy day was through, in her few minutes of free time, she would create intricate embroidery or crocheting, oftentimes by creating her own pattern.

Having been raised in a very religious house, Consuelo was herself very devout and a practicing Catholic. She was very family oriented and she and Jose would frequently get the grown family together with the enticement of a family backyard BBQ.  She was an amazing cook and had a talent for stretching the food dollar. She was also generous and affectionate to those she loved.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose; her sisters, Luz and Dolores Diaz; and her brothers Alejandro, Enrique, Jesus and Ciriaco Diaz. She also suffered the sudden loss of her beloved young grandson, Eric Diaz.

She is survived by her children, Amador (Josephina), Victoria (Mark), Delia (Cassimiro-deceased), Joseph (Patricia) and Richard (Denise), as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Also sister Celia Onofre and brother Jose Cruz Diaz.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date and Consuelo will be laid to rest next to her husband Jose in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery.
