It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl Lynn (Strait) Nunez, who, after a brave battle with cancer, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, at the age of 61. Cheryl was a loving mother, a dear sister, a cherished friend to many, and a beloved member of her community, whose strength, kindness, and giving nature touched everyone she met.

Born on September 20, 1962, Cheryl was an accomplished athlete with a deep love for golf and bowling. Her enthusiasm for sports fostered a wide network of friends, and she relished many joyful days on the golf course and in the bowling alley, where she shared laughter and friendly competition. A passionate supporter of the Chicago Bears and Cubs, Cheryl took immense pleasure in cheering on her favorite teams with unwavering pride. She also enjoyed playing the lottery, trying her luck at slot machines, and was affectionately known as the “Yahtzee Queen” among family and friends, excelling in her favorite game and always eager to play.

Cheryl’s vibrant spirit and generosity were evident in all she did. She loved dancing, singing karaoke, and spreading joy wherever she went. Her dedication to her family and friends was unmatched, and she was a cherished volunteer and host, bringing people together with her warmth and kindness. After retiring from Joliet West High School, where she made a lasting impact, Cheryl continued to brighten the lives of others with her caring heart and radiant smile.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Albert Gene Strait; her mother, Mildred Irene (Skelding-Strait) Briggs; her stepfather, Roger Briggs; her grandparents, William (Pearl) Skelding, Louella Blake, William Strait; her siblings, Timothy Strait and Douglas Strait; and her in-laws, Manuel (Juanita) Nunez, Richard Nunez and Manuel Nunez Jr.

She is survived by her stepmother, Ramona (Ward) Strait of OH; her loving spouse, David Joseph Nunez of IL; her siblings Darlene (Willie) Floyd of IL, Curtis (Lori) Strait of IL Cheryl Strait of OH, Michele Coe (Russ) of OH, Rhonda (Ronnie) Dawson Dickson of OH and Ronnie (Amber) Anderson of PA: her in-laws Joann (Paul) Brown of IL, Mary Nunez of IL, Rita (Nunez) De La Rosa of IN, Ray De La Rosa of IN, and Nancy Nunez of CO. 

Cheryl’s legacy lives on through her beloved children Stacy (Nick) Rose and Angel (Keith) Guild, and her grandchildren Aye Brimberry, Caillou Brimberry, Triton Brimberry, Landon Rose, Tyler Rose, and Joe Guild.

She is also lovingly remembered by many aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She will be laid to rest next to her father in Sebring, Ohio, a place close to her heart. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society, continuing her legacy of generosity and care. Cheryl fought her battle with cancer with remarkable courage, and she leaves behind an enduring legacy of resilience, love, and compassion. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

A Visitation will be held at Tezak’s Home to Celebrate Life on Thursday, September 12 from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm with words of remembrance to take place at 7:00 pm. Interment will take place at The Grandview Cemetery in Sebring, Ohio with the date and time yet to be determined. Once Interment details are finalized, they will be updated here.
