Betty Jane Azman (nee Spiers)
Age 104 of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2024 at Lakewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Plainfield.
Born June of 1919 in La Moille, Illinois, Betty Jane was a daughter of the late John and Ruth (Vickery) Spiers. She was a lifelong resident of Joliet and graduated from Joliet Central High School with the class of 1937. While at Joliet Central, Betty enjoyed singing and was a member of both the a cappella and choir groups.
After her marriage, Betty devoted her time to her husband and five children. Later, Betty worked for a number of years at the Joliet Post Office and later worked for and retired from the Illinois Bureau of Identification. After retirement, Betty dedicated several years serving as a lunchroom supervisor for Plainfield Central Elementary School. Her most distinguished and treasured job though was taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren. She was the full-time babysitter and caretaker for her grandchildren throughout their infancy, toddler and elementary school years. Betty and her husband Chuck were members of the American Legion Post 1080 for most of their lives, and it should also be noted that Betty was a lifelong die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs. If the mood struck, Betty would drive her children and her grandchildren to countless Cubs games over the years. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Betty is survived by her sister: Joyce (the late John) Helis; daughters: Bettina (Eric) Johnson and Charity (Greg) Glas; grandsons: Charles, John Michael, William, Kurt, Brad and Adam; granddaughters: Christiane, Amberlyne, Erika, Allison, Sarah and Victoria, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Charles Azman, Sr.; daughter: Mary Ruth Erickson; sons: Charles, Jr. and Jonathon; parents: John and Ruth; brothers: William, Edward and Thomas, and sisters: Gloria Lenci and Jean (Strappazon) Peterson.
Per the family’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a memorial visitation on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until time of memorial service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet.
A private interment will be held at a later date and Betty will be laid to rest with her husband at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Joliet.
