Bernard L. Haggerty, age 93, peacefully passed away with his family at his side on Wednesday, January 25th 2023.
Bernie was born in Joliet on October 1st, 1929, to Thomas and Agnes (Kocjan). After graduating from Joliet Catholic High School, he joined the Unites States Army and served as a MP during World War II in occupied Japan. He returned home to work for Commonwealth Edison. During his career, he served as President of IBEW Local #1460, Vice President of Systems Counsel and a member of the Joliet Police and Fire Board.
Bernie was an avid sports fan. You could always find him watching a sporting event on television or listening to it on the radio. He spent many years coaching Little League Baseball at Belmont, Ingalls Park and St. Joe's. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and road trips to warmer places. He always had something funny to say and will be remembered for his sense of humor.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Kathleen (Pat); his children, Michael (Patti), Colleen (Robert) Fox, Daniel (Arlene Gryzlak), Terrance (Lori Bond), and Kevin (Heidi); grandchildren, Lisa Barajas, Brian (Elizabeth) Haggerty, Erin (Michael) Cimino, Nicole (Danny) John, Kelly (Dave) Gricius, Mallory Haggerty, Megan (Victor) McCall, Casey Haggerty, and Rebecca Haggerty; he is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in his death is his sons, Kerry (Scooter) and Patrick Haggerty; and his 6 siblings.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Lightways Hospice for providing such outstanding care to Bernie.
In lieu of flowers, a donation, in his name, may be made to Lightways Hospice or masses to be said in his name would be appreciated.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will begin on Monday, January 30, 2023 with a visitation at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Then driving in procession to St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Joliet.
