August A. Tomac “Gus”, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 06, 2017 at Joliet Area Community Hospice.
Gus is survived by his beloved daughter, Marilyn C. (Tom Demask) Strle and loving son, August (Karen) Tomac; beloved grandchildren, Shelly (Jeffery) Maliska and Jennifer (Dwayne) Marcum; great-grandchildren, Holly and Jeffrey Maliska, Joelle Marcum, Bethany (Jeremy) Darby and Alec Marcum. Numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces, nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Also survived by his beloved cats Twinkie and Fluffy.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine (nee Plese) Tomac; parents, John and Catherine (nee Senffner) Tomac; eight siblings, Mary Picha, Stephanie Maryonovich, Sophie Link, Catherine Hochevar, Jean Rubocki, Andrew Tomac, John Tomac and Tom Tomac.
Gus resided in the Joliet/Crest Hill area his entire life. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Force stationed in Guam. Gus later retired from the Labor’s Will County Local 75. Gus and Kay were the first couple to be wed in St. Anne Catholic Church, Crest Hill, in November 1947 and were active in the development of the St. Anne Chapel and School now known as St. Ambrose. Many will remember him for his play on baseball and fast-pitch softball fields of the Joliet area and as a coach in the early years of Joliet Colt League Baseball.
The family of August wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Rosewood Care Center especially Jodi and Jamie; as well as the staff of Joliet Area Community Hospice and the many professionals that have worked with and cared for Gus.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Joliet Area Community Hospice or memorials in August’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
Funeral services for August A. Tomac will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 with a visitation at Tezak Funeral Home (1211 Plainfield Road – Joliet, IL) from 9:30 a.m. until the time of chapel prayers beginning at 10:30 a.m. then driving in procession to St. Anne Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery in Crest Hill.
