Andrew J. “Mickey” Mikuska, age 89, entered into eternal life on Sunday, October 6, 2024 with his loving family at his side.
Andrew was born to Andrew and Mary (Sefcik) Mikuska in Joliet, IL on July 23, 1935.
He is survived by his devoted children, Michael (Janet) Mikuska, Cheryl (Tom) Ringfelt, Russell (Laura) Mikuska and Daniel (Ramee) Mikuska; grandchildren, Julia (Michael) Viehweg, Michael, Amy, Zachary, Madison, Alexis, and Drew Mikuska.
He will be remembered fondly by his remaining siblings, Donald (Carol) Mikuska, MaryAnn Mikuska, Joseph (Pauline) Mikuska, Rosemary (the late Gerald) Fabian, Barbara DiLorenzo, Rita (Robert) Rock, and John (Mary Kay) Mikuska; sisters-in-law, Carol (Stan) Demsky and Shirley (the late Raymond) Yakich; cousins, Bob (Linda) Gramera, James Sefcik and Maryann (Dennis) Ancel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, the great love of his life his wife, Helen (nee Yakich); his brothers, Richard (the late Emma), Eugene (the late Carol), and William (the late Dorothy); brothers and sisters-in-law, Frances Yakich, John (Adele) Yakich, Ed (Lois) Yakich, Raymond Yakich, Rich (Gloria) Yakich, Bernard (Joan) Yakich, James (Margie) Yakich and Cy (Dorothy) Gura; and beloved Aunt, Mary Jachinowski.
Mickey's career began at the young age of 15 when he joined Ware Oil Company, quickly demonstrating a remarkable work ethic and passion for the oil industry helped him achieve the role as manager. His journey continued as he partnered with Sheldon Hauck of Hauck Oil, where they worked tirelessly to establish a reputable business in their field. Mickey's leadership and vision culminated in his role as president of Mickey Oil, a company he owned and operated with pride for over 50 years. His contributions to the industry did not go unnoticed, earning him the respect of his peers and the community.
Beyond his professional life, Mickey proudly served in the National Guard, showcasing his commitment to his country. Mickey was a vibrant individual, known for his welcoming demeanor. He had a unique ability to make people feel at ease, always greeting them with a warm smile and his signature phrase, "What's upski?" This cheerful personality left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Mickey cherished family and, above all, loved his grandchildren dearly. His deep affection for them was evident in the way he engaged with their lives, nurturing countless memories that they will carry forward.
Mickey was not just a businessman but also a passionate individual with a wide array of interests. He was an avid fisherman, often finding solace and joy at his second home on Beaver Lake in Arkansas. Additionally, Mickey was a long-time enthusiast of racing, owning two midget race cars, and particularly enjoyed open wheel racing. His loyalty extended to his favorite sports teams, as he was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Mickey was a lifetime member of the Ingalls Park A.C. A 60 year member of the Illinois Petroleum Marketing Association, and above all, a devout Catholic and member of SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurses, Becky, Reagan, Imelda and Kyle on the ICU floor at St. Joseph Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated.
A celebration of Mickey’s life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:20 a.m. then driving in procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Joliet. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
