Albert Mavec

Albert Mavec, age 91, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, March 22, 2021.

Albert is survived by his beloved children; Monica Mavec, Joseph Mavec, Jana (Mark) Hlade, Meka (Eric) Celidonio, Michael (Stacy) Mavec, and Martin (Emily) Mavec. He leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Jared and Melanie Morrissette, Samantha and Marty Mavec, Megan, Kyle, and Sarah Hlade, Ana and Trey Celidonio, and Grace and Michael Mavec. Also survived by numerous relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Paula (nee Bajda) Mavec; parents, Joseph and Frances (nee Cimperman) Mavec; siblings, Ida (nee Mavec) Babic and Felix Mavec; and daughter-in-law, Marylynn (nee Bruce) Mavec.

Albert was born in Slovenia, and fled the country during World War ll. He lived in a refugee camp in Austria for 6 years, and immigrated to the United States in 1950. He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for over 40 years. Albert was a long-time parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, and a member of Holy Name Society and the Slovenian Catholic League. He was also a member of KSKJ and the Slovenian Catholic/Cultural Center. Albert enjoyed carpentry and was an avid runner participating in several Chicago Marathon races.  He was a dedicated Chicago Bears fan and loved watching football and soccer.  Albert was competitive about playing Bocce Ball, and enjoyed playing the Button Box. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Albert’s life will be on Monday, April 12th, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 416 N Chicago Street in Joliet, with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10:00 am. Inurnment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Joliet. Per Albert’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, donations to Joliet Area Community Hospice in his memory are appreciated. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing are required at the church and cemetery.
